Colour Consultancy

An introduction to colour selection.

Why can some people choose the right colours and others cannot?

The answer may be quite simple; perhaps they are not aware of the basic terms and concepts of primary, secondary and tertiary colours.

Luckily, the rules for choosing colours are not that complicated. Let us explain.

Colour . Basic Terms and Concepts

Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colours.

There are three primary colours: red, blue and yellow. The word 'primary' is used to describe these colours because they cannot be mixed from others colours.

The 'colour wheel' shows how the three primary colours can be mixed to produce the three secondary colours: orange, green and purple (sometimes called violet).

The word 'secondary' is used to describe the fact that these colours are the result of mixing two primary colours.

If you then mix a 'primary' colour with a 'secondary' colour the result will be a 'tertiary' colour. These have imaginative names like red-orange, yellow-orange, blue-green, etcetera.

There are three colour schemes that are commonly used. They are:

1. Monochromatic: This is the most commonly used colour scheme. Most spaces are painted using a single neutral colour.

2. Analogous: If you choose two or three colours next to each other on the colour wheel, you have an analogous colour scheme.

3. Complimentary: Complimentary colours look great together in the right proportions. Making used of this fact when painting and decorating a home is referred to as using a complimentary colour scheme.

Colour Consultants specialise in developing colour schemes for commercial, exteriors, interiors, residential and retail properties, by understanding colour and how it affects humans in their day-to-day environments.

A colour consultant is able to support their clients by reflecting the latest look or trend in colours, colour schemes and decorative painted finishes.
